This unique four-day intensive ‘Sustainable Market Transformation’ course provided by NewForesight and Nyenrode supports you in developing the skills and mindset to successfully initiate and lead complex transition processes.

As a society, we are facing complex sustainability challenges. How do we increase energy production in the coming decades while at the same time reducing the use of fossil fuels? How do we change a linear economy to a circular economy in which valuable material flows are retained instead of discarded at the end their lifecycle? How do we implement societal changes in a way that respects or enhances biodiversity as much as possible? And how do we do this in a market driven way?

“… THIS WAS BY FAR THE BEST COURSE AND OVERALL LEARNING EXPERIENCE TO DATE. ‘DEEPLY PERSONAL’ REALLY MEANS ‘DEEPLY PERSONAL’.”

There are no simple solutions to complex sustainability challenges. Solving these challenges requires various parties – including government agencies, market actors and NGOs – to collaborate and jointly define the problem and its solutions. But how do you know what to do when to do it? For everyone who is involved in such processes, good understanding of how transition processes work is crucial.

Changing the
Game Course

NewForesight and Nyenrode have developed a unique four-day intensive course in sustainable market transformation: Changing the Game. This course provides project leaders and key decision-makers with the insights, tools and mindsets that are needed to initiate and accelerate any transition process.

  • What is the language of instruction for the course?

The four-day intensive course (Changing the Game) is taught in English. For in-company training, Dutch is optional.

  • Can anyone register for this five-day intensive course?

This course is open to anyone who is currently working in the field of sustainability. The course is intended for managers, leaders and practitioners in any sector, market or type of organization. This is a good way to get started and familiarize yourself with the thinking on sustainable market transformation.

  • How do I know if this course is for me?

    We believe this course is crucial for anyone who is working in the field of sustainability and wants to achieve structural change. If you recognize yourself or your organization in any the following statements, then you know that this is the course for you;

    • My organization has been working on the same issues for years now, but we do not seem to achieve structural change. Our current sustainability strategies do not seem to be working.
    • I do not think more projects, pilots and experiments will work. We need a strategy that actually gets us to scale.
    • When should I work together with others and when can I just go ahead and seize the opportunities?
    • Sometimes I feel we are all just talking about change, when we should take action. But what should we do?
    • We are all blaming the other parties. And they blame us. Aren’t we in this together?
    • Everyone claims to have a different solution. Some call for more projects and pilots, while others call for new legislation or more government funding. Others want us to join their solutions. What should we do?
    • We do not seem to understand each other; we do not even have the same definition of the problem. How can we align ourselves to work together?
    • I don’t believe we are actually changing the root cause of the problem. But I’m not sure how to do this. What is my role in this process? What can I do?

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • What should I do to prepare for this course?

The best way to prepare for the course is to read the book Changing the Game, and download and read articles on this website. After you have registered for the course we will also send preparatory homework assignments. And come to the course with an open mind. Be ready to learn many new things – and unlearn many things you previously believed. Be ready to step into your leadership role and take action on the plan you will create.

  • What will I learn from this course?
    • This course will help you understand the underlying causes of sustainability problems. This means you will never read newspapers the same way again.
    • This course will give you insight into what needs to be done, who needs to do it and when. This insight will make a crucial difference between just doing something and doing exactly what is needed to achieve better results more quickly and create more value in a cost-efficient way.
“THIS COURSE CHANGED MY VIEWS ON CHANGE AND TRANSFORMATION IN SOCIETY AND ON MY ROLE IN THIS. I’LL NEVER SEE THE WORLD THE SAME AGAIN”

How is this course structured?

The course includes the following main elements

Defining sustainability in your market

Our big sustainability challenges do not occur randomly or by mistake. They are the logical outcome of how the system is designed. Understand the system that underlies your market or sector by analyzing four system loops that together produce the sustainability challenges.

Understanding the transition processes

A transition process goes through four maturity phases. Each phase has its own characteristics and strategies for the market actors who are involved. By understanding these phases we can find answers to the following questions: Which sustainability issues have been tackled in the past and have now become institutionalized to various degrees? Which cases and initiatives are already in development and what can we learn from them? What setbacks are to be expected and how do you cope with this? Which initiatives can facilitate a transition to the next phase of the market transformation process?

Strengthening your leadership

The world needs your leadership. Only 20% of success comes from using the right strategies, while 80% of success is having the right mindset. What is holding you back from initiating, leading and facilitating successful transformation processes? How can have the confidence to do what is needed, to lead change anywhere in the system? We will work with you to solve these problems.

Who are your Trainers?

This powerful five-day intensive course will enable you to work directly and in close contact with the lead trainers Lucas Simons and André Nijhof, authors of the book Changing the Game. They have worked together for more than five years on developing the concepts of market transformation. This course is based on more than 20 years of real-life experience on a global level. Simons and Nijhof have trained hundreds of decision-makers, managers and students from many sectors and markets. Nijhof has supervised numerous PhD studies and graduation theses on this topic and has authored and co-authored many publications.
